They call it “Hell’s Tower” and it’s located in the outskirts of the Hungarian city of Veszprém. But similar situations of neglect and squalor are unhappily also to be found in many other cities.
The building has been neglected for years; robbed and ravaged, it has been left without electricity, heating or lifts and its residents have become social outcasts. The tower block became a ramshackle shelter for people in situations of extreme poverty, many of whom were poorly educated, unemployed and struggling with alcoholism and drug addiction.

International Women's Day was founded to raise awareness of the vulnerability and unequal status of women across the globe. Today, the Order of Malta's programmes support women in some of the world's most violent regions.
In the Democratic Republic of Congo, the Order of Malta provides psychological and medical treatment for women who have been subjected to assault, rape and further atrocities in the conflict-ridden province of South Kivu. Sexual violence is a defining characteristic of the conflict in the region, where rape is used as a strategic weapon and women live in fear of assault.

Ninety-two volunteers - doctors, nurses and paramedics - who for over 35 years have been daily assisting the numerous pilgrims arriving in St. Peter’s from all over the world. These are the numbers of the Order of Malta’s “First-Aid Post”, situated just a few metres from the forecourt of the basilica. First established for the Holy Year of 1950, with a tent set up alongside the colonnade in St. Peter’s Square, since 1975 the centre has a permanent structure in the Braccio di Carlo Magno, at the bottom of the stairs and not far from the Aula Paolo VI, which the pope normally uses for his general Wednesday audiences.
