The President of the Republic of Italy, Giorgio Napolitano, received the diplomatic corps in the Quirinal Palace to exchange new year’s greetings. On this occasion, the ambassador of the Sovereign Order of Malta, Giulio di Lorenzo Badia, vice-doyen of the diplomatic corps, took the floor and gave the speech we publish hereinafter.

Tropical Storm in the Philippines: Number of people affected doubled since Monday

According to the most recent reports by the Philippine disaster management authorities, the number of people affected by Friday’s flash floods has doubled since Monday. More than 63,000 families, or 338,000 people, have lost their homes and belongings due to the storm waters. More than 280,000 residents have taken shelter in evacuation centres in the disaster area, and more than 1,500 people are injured. The death toll now nears 1,000.
The Philippine association of the Order of Malta, which is conducting relief activities in the region in coordination with Malteser International, are sending nearly two tons of food, medicines and supplies to the disaster area around Cagayan de Oro and Iligan. Four volunteer aid workers of the association’s auxiliary corps will arrive in Cagayan tomorrow.

Mali: signature of a cooperation agreement

On Monday 5 December 2011, the Order of Malta and the World Health Organization – Mali office – signed a cooperation and partnership agreement in the WHO meeting room in Bamako.
The agreement, signed by H. E. Guy de Richemont, Ambassador of the Order of Malta, and by Dr. Fatoumata Binta Tidiane Diallo, WHO representative for Mali, specifies that both parties will study, define and implement cooperation projects in the hospitaller and health sector.

APPOINTMENTS IN THE SOVEREIGN COUNCIL

H.E. the Ven. Bailiff Fra’ Gherardo Hercolani Fava Simonetti presented his resignation to the Prince and Grand Master from the office of Grand Commander for health reasons.
In accordance with article 159 of the Code, the Prince and Grand Master and the Sovereign Council, in its session of 6 and 7 December 2011, appointed H.E. Fra’ Carlo d’Ippolito di Sant’Ippolito, Grand Cross of Justice, already member of the Sovereign Council, to the office of Grand Commander.
During the same session, in accordance with article 167 of the Code, the Knight of Justice Gian Luigi Magliocco di Brugneto was appointed member of the Sovereign Council.

Vietnamese youths protect flood-prone communities through Disaster Risk Reduction workshops

In Vietnam, one of the most disaster-prone countries in the world, the Order of Malta’s worldwide relief organisation, Malteser International, is conducting Disaster Risk Reduction projects to prepare the local population for potential future catastrophes. Coastal villages face frequent tropical storms which lead to floods almost every year. The Order of Malta’s project involves children and young adults in recognition of the essential roles they can play in helping keep their communities safe.

Social and emergency response cooperation in the meeting with the Slovak interior minister Daniel Lipsic

The Order of Malta’s projects for the integration of Roma minorities and the development of the relative cooperation with the Republic of Slovakia were the focus of the talks between the Slovak Interior Minister Daniel Lipsic and the Order’s Grand Chancellor Jean-Pierre Mazery.
The situation of the Roma people and the problems linked to their social integration were analysed in the hour-long talks in the Magistral Palace.

Essential eye-care for impoverished children in Hungary

Two years of conducting medical examinations in the poorest areas of Hungary has shown Order of Malta doctors that more and more people in isolated, marginalised communities are out of the reach of institutional healthcare. According to rough estimations 20% of children living in deprived areas are visually impaired. In response to this the Hungarian Charity Service of the Order of Malta has launched a special programme entitled “Put on the glasses and see!” which has so far donated over a thousand pairs of glasses to impoverished children with impaired eyesight.

Emergency relief in Cambodia after severe floods

After the strongest rains in a decade left 18 of Cambodia’s 24 provinces under water, the Order of Malta’s relief service for humanitarian aid, Malteser International, started last week to provide emergency relief for 2,000 families in northern Cambodia. The South-Asian country has been severely affected by the floods: almost 250 people have died, 46,000 homes have been evacuated, and much of the rice harvest has been destroyed.
