Founded in Jerusalem in the 11th century, the Order of Malta is a sovereign subject of international law and a lay religious order of the Catholic Church. Its 13,500 members, 80,000 volunteers and over 25,000 medical personnel are dedicated to caring for people in need. Projects are run across 120 countries, many of which help victims of armed conflicts and natural disasters by providing medical assistance, caring for refugees, and distributing medicines and basic equipment for survival.
