    Ordre de Malte France medical teams on the ground after the Paris attacks

    The Grand Master Fra’ Matthew Festing sent a message of condolence to the French President François Hollande after the shocking attacks in Paris, which left 130 people dead and hundreds injured. “In this tragic moment I wish to express our sincere condolences, closeness and spiritual solidarity to the families of all the victims and to the people of France”.

    In the six months following the Nepal earthquake, Malteser International has provided 70,000 people with aid. More than 10,000 families – around 62,000 people – were provided with staple foodstuffs, hygiene articles, tarpaulins, and toolkits, as well as given help to clear the rubble from their homes and villages.     The Hungarian Charity Service of the Order of Malta runs emergency medical and relief programmes across the country to address the plight of refugees. Areas where needs are greatest have been targeted first: at the Eastern Railway Station in Budapest medics and social workers operate a mobile clinic, treating people for injuries and illnesses and distributing food, water and clothes. The service employs Urdu, Pashtu, Dari and Farsi interpreters on voluntary basis.

    The Sovereign Order of Malta launches a campaign for World Refugee Day to raise awareness of this worldwide drama. The number of refugees and displaced persons worldwide has reached levels not recorded since the end of World War II. In Syria, over four years of conflict now mean that a family is forced to leave home every 60 seconds. The Order of Malta is on the front line offering assistance to refugees and displaced people, both in the countries involved in the conflicts and in the final destinations of asylum seekers.

    Opening of the cause for the Beatification of Fra’ Andrew Bertie

    Some 1,300 people came to Rome from all over the world to participate in the mass and opening of the diocesan inquiry on the Cause of Beatification and Canonisation of the Servant of God Fra’ Andrew Bertie. A very significant event for the Order of Malta, as it is the first time in its millenary history that a Grand Master has been proposed for sainthood.
