A new adventure playground and a camp for children was inaugurated in the village of Cedros de Villa last March. This event concluded the project “Helping the Disadvantaged in the South” funded by Malteser International after the disastrous 7.9 magnitude earthquake that hit the central coast of Peru in August 2007.

After having helped reconstruct Cedros de Villa and Nuevo Hulacarà, the Peruvian Malteser volunteers continued to work in other villages. A healthcare centre has been created on the second floor of a students’ canteen, called “Vergine di Fileremo” in honour of the Order of Malta’s patron. Run by the Carmelite nuns, it will treat 150 patients a day, mainly covering pediatric and gynaecological issues.

A further activity involved distributing educational supplies such as books, pencils and school-bags for over 150 children in the province of Cañete in March.
