On 13 January, the Sovereign Military Order of Malta and the Republic of Palau signed a Declaration of Intent in Tokyo preparatory to establishing formal diplomatic relations.
The agreement was signed by the Ambassador of the Order of Malta to the Federated States of Micronesia and the Republic of Nauru, Fabrizio Bozzato – on behalf of the Grand Chancellor – and the Ambassador of the Republic of Palau to Japan, Peter Adelbai.
The document expresses the mutual desire to develop and strengthen the bonds of collaboration and friendship between the two parties. By signing this Declaration, the Order of Malta and the Republic of Palau agree to progress in reciprocal understanding and implement cooperation channels in view of the official opening of diplomatic relations.
This new agreement marks a further significant step in consolidating the Order’s presence in the Pacific region. Following recent declarations signed with other nations in Oceania and the Caribbean — such as Vanuatu and Saint Kitts and Nevis — the Order of Malta continues to extend its diplomatic network, which currently counts relations with 115 States.
Special attention to small island developing States remains a priority for the Order’s humanitarian and diplomatic action, with the aim of addressing common challenges and promoting projects to support local populations.
