Healthcare programmes are stepped up in Angola

Healthcare programmes are stepped up in Angola
11/11/2003

Since the beginning of September, the Order of Malta German Emergency Corps (Malteser) has provided primary heathcare to 165,000 Angolans, including refugees, internally displaced persons and returnees, in Kuando Kubango in the southeast of Angola.

Health facilities have been supplied with medicaments and medical equipment. Health workers have been trained and immunisation programmes are being established. Pregnant women and children under the age of five are receiving supplementary feeding. Those extremely affected by civil war have been given household supplies – blankets, jerry cans, household kits and soap. Mobile health units are advising the population on nutrition, hygiene and HIV/AIDS.

This new project has been implemented with support from ECHO (European Commission – Humanitarian Office) and in cooperation with the provincial government, the Catholic Diocese of Kuando Kubango and the local Caritas organisation.
