Order of Malta and the Italian navy: second joint humanitarian operation in Albania
03/10/2005

Sunday 25 September 2005, the 28th Naval Group Command, with base in Valona (Albania), completed the delivery of humanitarian materials on behalf of the Order to Malta to the catholic mission in the village of Zheje, some 50 km north-east of the city of Durazzo.

Basic foodstuffs, teaching material for first-level schools, reading books in Italian, clothing for children and adults and other necessary items arrived in the small centre with its 2000 inhabitants, situated at the feet of impervious mountains.

After the essential humanitarian items had arrived by sea on the ship ‘Caprera’ they were unloaded onto staff vehicles belonging to the Naval Group, then transported along difficult roads in the Albanian hinterland. At an average speed of 25 km/h the convey, having left the base camp in the early morning, arrived at its destination in the afternoon to the great satisfaction and gratitude of the religious in the mission.

A similar initiative had been carried out last March.
