The Grand Master of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta, Fra’ John T. Dunlap, today welcomed the President of the Slovak Republic, Peter Pellegrini, on a courtesy visit to the Magistral Palace, confirming the excellent state of relations, which began in 1993 and have been consolidated over time by constant and fruitful cooperation.

The Grand Master expressed gratitude to the Slovak Government for its constant support of the Order’s works, personally restated by President Pellegrini during the talks. The desire to further promote activities was highlighted, particularly through the recent establishment of the Slovak National Association of the Order of Malta (April 2024), which represents a significant milestone in the history of relations between the two institutions and a decisive impetus for social impact initiatives.

The Slovak President praised the Order’s commitment in the country, recognizing the value of the initiatives carried out by Malteser Aid Slovakia in support of the most vulnerable communities. The Order’s relief organization, active since 2014, currently coordinates over 150 members and volunteers. Particularly engaged in educational and integration programs aimed at Roma children and families through community centers in Nitra and Topoľčany, which are now reference points for hundreds of people, the organization is also active on other fronts: from assistance to lonely elderly people to distributing meals to the homeless, from supporting people with disabilities to organizing medical and social services. Pellegrini also extended his thanks for the significant contribution offered by the relief corps to Ukrainian refugees since the early stages of the conflict, through widespread commitment both along the border and in the Slovak cities that have received thousands of people fleeing the conflict.

The discussion also offered an opportunity for an exchange of views on current international affairs. A common concern was shared regarding the serious violations of human rights in theaters of war, particularly in Ukraine and Gaza, with the hope for a swift cessation of hostilities.

The Order’s assistance programmes in crisis areas were presented, outlining prospects for joint cooperation in third countries, which will be defined by mutual agreement in the coming months.

Finally, President Pellegrini invited the Grand Master on an official visit to Slovakia in 2026, invite that the Grand Master accepted willingly.
