For three decades, the Blessed Gérard Care Center has stood as a beacon of hope, compassion and professional care for some of the most vulnerable communities in KwaZulu-Natal. Operating in Mandeni since 1996 thanks to the Brotherhood of Blessed Gérard and the patronage of the German Association of the Order of Malta, the Center is celebrating thirty years of uninterrupted service inspired by the Order’s centuries-old hospitaller mission.
At the heart of the clinical and social activities that make the Center a vital resource for vulnerable populations are the residential hospice for palliative care, which ensures dignified end-of-life care and effective pain management for patients suffering from advanced HIV/AIDS, cancer and organ failure, and the antiretroviral clinic, which continues to accompany hundreds of patients on long-term treatment. Beyond the provision of medical services, efficiently supported by Mobile Medical Units operating in the region, particular attention is devoted to preserving the dignity of every person entrusted to the Center’s care, ensuring that each patient receives not only professional treatment but also compassionate accompaniment, personal attention and respect throughout every stage of illness.
Significant attention is also devoted to childcare programmes through Blessed Gérard’s Early Childhood Development Centre, which has been operating since 1994 to provide preschool education and holistic care to dozens of children from the rural communities of Owhebede. The facility, which ensures a safe environment, daily nutritional support, education and excellent hygiene and sanitation standards, is a concrete expression of the Order’s charism in service to the most vulnerable, combining professional excellence with deep human compassion.
To mark this important milestone, the Grand Hospitaller of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta, H.E. Josef D. Blotz, paid an official visit to the Centre, reaffirming the close bond between the Order and one of its most significant humanitarian works in Southern Africa. Throughout his stay, the Grand Hospitaller met with staff members, volunteers, patients, children and local community leaders, gaining first-hand insight into the many initiatives carried out by the Brotherhood of Blessed Gérard which was founded by Father Gérard T. Lagleder as the Order’s Relief Organization in South Africa in 1992.
the visit offered an opportunity to experience directly the daily reality of the Centre. The Grand Hospitaller spent time alongside medical personnel and caregivers in the hospice, meeting patients and learning about the challenges and achievements of the palliative care and HIV treatment programmes. He also visited the Children’s Home and Early Childhood Development Centre, where he joined educational and recreational activities with the children and witnessed the extraordinary commitment of the educators and caregivers who accompany them every day.
The celebrations culminated on 6 September with a Solemn Holy Mass of Thanksgiving presided over by Cardinal Wilfrid Fox Napier O.F.M. in Blessed Gérard’s ChurchThe liturgy brought together members of the Brotherhood, representatives of the Order of Malta, benefactors, volunteers, staff and local faithful in gratitude for thirty years of faithful service inspired by the ideals of Blessed Gérard, founder of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem.
Thirty years after its inauguration, Blessed Gérard’s Care Centre remains a shining example of the Order of Malta’s humanitarian mission in action. Through the dedication of the Brotherhood of Blessed Gérard, its staff, volunteers and benefactors, the Centre continues to provide professional healthcare, education, social support and compassionate accompaniment to thousands of people in need, carrying forward a legacy of service inspired by Blessed Gérard and sustained by the enduring values of faith, solidarity and charity.
