Democratic Republic of Congo: emergency aid for idps
20/06/2003

For several weeks already, the population of Bunia in the North-East of the Democratic Republic of Congo and the whole province Ituri suffer from severe fightings of rival armed ethnic factions. The fighting and looting prompted a mass exodus, more than 80,000 people are estimated to have fled the region to Aru and Ariwara in the north. The Emergency Corps of the Order of Malta has been working in DR Congo already since 1996 and they give assistance to the local health-care system by supporting about 270 health centres in the province of Ituri. As our regional coordinator Dr. Alfred Kinzelbach reported from Ariwara, the internally displaced people now above all need medical care. There is a big danger of epidemic, the lack of food weakens the body. With the financial support of the German Federal Foreign Office, the Emergency Corps teams in DR Congo will provide about 17.000 Congolese internally displaced persons (IDPs) which have fled in the north of the province of Ituri with medicine, clothes and further relief goods and thus ensure the basic healthcare for the people.
