Floods in Mexico: the Order’s relief action airlifted in by helicopter
09/11/2007

The Order’s Mexican Association, together with Malteser International and the international network of the Order of Malta, stepped in last week to provide US$ 200,000 for immediate support to flood victims in Tabasco, Mexico. They have followed this up with practical action in the distressed area.

With the continuing effects of the disastrous floods in the region, over 300,000 victims still need special support as the flood waters slowly recede, leaving damage and the threat of disease in their wake. The Order’s relief activities, including the help of 30 doctors and tons of medicines, have been airlifted in by helicopter.

‘The threat of illness at this time is very real,’ says Malteser International’s Ingo Radtke. ‘We are working with the Mexican Association to distribute clean drinking water, food, hygiene kits and blankets as well as having our medical teams on the ground.’
