Malteser International is providing economic support for the relief operations set up in Java, Indonesia after the earthquake measuring 7.4 on the Richter scale hit the Tasikmelaya district in West Java province on 2 September. It caused the death of 77 people, with 1,255 injured and almost 90,000 made homeless. According to official estimates around 68,000 houses were damaged, some 64,000 badly damaged and over 23,000 completely destroyed.

The Order of Malta’s international relief corps is prepared to help finance the emergency aid measures set up by the Indonesian YEU organization, a local partner with which Malteser International had already worked after the earthquake that struck the archipelago in May 2006.
