This morning, the new numismatic issue of the Sovereign Order of Malta for 2024 was presented to Grand Master Fra’ John Dunlap, who was gifted the first example by the Receiver of the Common Treasure, Fabrizio Colonna di Paliano.
The coins are part of the “Hospitals of the Order” series, which this year focuses on the Cyprus Hospital, 13th-14th century. The series was launched in 2021 with the depiction of the first hospital in Jerusalem in the 11th century, followed in 2022 by the reproduction of the 13th-century St. John of Acre hospital. The next issues will continue to celebrate the Order of Malta’s hospitaller activity during its 900 years of history, from its origins to the present day.
Approved by the Order of Malta’s Sovereign Council with decree N. 2763 of 30 April 2024, the numismatic series consists of six coins, in gold, silver and bronze, in Scudi, Tarì and Grani, the Order’s historical currency. These new coins bear the image of Fra’ John Dunlap on the obverse and on the reverse the artistic depiction of the current remains of Kolossi Castle in Limassol, Cyprus, where the Knights Hospitaller of the Order of Saint John established their headquarters from 1291 to 1309.
More information on this issue is available on the Order of Malta’s Poste Magistrali website.
