Sponsored by the Cuban association of the Order of Malta, a new medical mission to the Institute for Latin American care- a health centre located in Santiago, Dominican Republic- has just been successfully completed. Altogether a team of 85 doctors, nurses, pharmacists, physical therapists, and volunteers visited around 1000 patients in need of medical assistance (615 adult / over 400 children).

Consultations in Cardiology, Internal Medicine, Pulmonology, Family Medicine, Paediatrics, Adult and Paediatric Urology, Emergency Medicine, Oncology, Radiology, General Surgery, Plastic Surgery, Dentistry, Anaesthesia, and Physical Therapy were provided during the mission, and over 50 surgical procedures and 100 ultrasonographic studies were performed by the team.

Jorge Echenique, Director of the mission and member of the Order of Malta, said: “it is an honor to take care of the Dominican Campesinos in the Dominican Republic. They are a noble people who are so grateful for what we do. But the reality is that even though we bring healing to them we receive so much more from them knowing that we are helping our fellowmen and women. We feel this so strongly in our hearts every time we travel to Santiago on these missions’.

This mission just ended is one of the many to the Dominican Republic bringing medical assistance to some of the most impoverished rural communities in the country. For over 15 years, the Cuban Association, headquartered in Miami, has been organizing the missions that, in addition to offering healthcare consultations, also entail the distribution of high-quality medicines for free.

The next medical mission has been scheduled for March 19-23, 2020.
