Order of Malta Mission to the UN in New York scales up its commitment to fight human trafficking
25/05/2021

The number of trafficked victims is soaring worldwide. Today, over 40 million people are trapped in some form of trafficking, going from sexual exploitation to illegal supply chain labour. Responding to Pope Francis’ call to end human trafficking, referred by His Holiness as a “crime against humanity”, the Order of Malta reiterates its engagement to fight this modern scourge. As a prelude to the upcoming United Nations revision of the “United Nations Global Plan of Action to Combat Trafficking in Persons”,  adopted in July 2010, the Sovereign Order of Malta’s Mission to the UN in New York has partnered with the Jesuit media body, America Media, in the presentation of a panel discussion on Human Trafficking.

The online panel took place on May 19 and was attended by distinguished speakers such as  Cardinal Vincent Nicholls of Westminster (United Kingdom) and Kevin Hyland, former UK Anti-Slavery Commissioner. Michel Veuthey the Order of Malta’s Ambassador at large to combat human trafficking also addressed the seminar. “The mission of the Sovereign Order of Malta to UN  is proud to help convene this conversation on so dire an issue as modern slavery, and to share it with our fellow delegates at the UN and throughout the world as a prelude to the revision of our action plan” stated the Order of Malta’s Ambassador to the UN in New York, Ambassador Paul Beresford-Hill.
