With financial support of the German Federal Foreign Office, the Order of Malta was able to extend the basic healthcare programme in Zimbabwe. In cooperation with the Deutscher Entwicklungsdienst (German Development Service, DED) and the Diocese of Mutare, the Order of Malta Malteser Hilfsdienst, Germany provide several hospitals in Manicaland with drugs and medical equipment. Many years of political oppression, misgovernment and drought have led to an aggravation of the humanitarian crisis in Zimbabwe. Especially children and mothers, old people and numerous HIV/AIDS patients suffer from the permanent deficiency of nutrition and healthcare services. The medical relief measures were started in August 2002. Basic healthcare for up to 85,000 people can now be ensured until at least the end of 2003.
