Order of Malta Diplomacy: Training Day for New Ambassadors

Order of Malta Training Day for New Ambassadors
06/03/2026

The training course for newly appointed ambassadors of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta took place today at the Magistral Villa in Rome. This course is for diplomatic representatives nominated during 2024 and 2025 and is designed to offer useful tools and guidance for initiating their mandate.

Opening the proceedings, the Grand Chancellor outlined the priorities and prospects of the Order of Malta’s diplomacy and pointed out how its diplomatic network continues to grow and consolidate globally. «Over the last 40 years, the number of countries with which we have diplomatic relations has almost tripled… Without citizens, we are recognized as a subject of international law. Without armies, we are respected in theatres of war. This is a very unique and high form of sovereignty», something that testifies to the trust and credibility the Order enjoys on the international stage.

In this respect, ambassadors represent genuine outposts of the Order of Malta, even in distant or particularly complex geographical areas, helping to build institutional relations and to promote the humanitarian initiatives carried out by the various entities around the world.
Their assignment also has a peculiar characteristic: it is a mission accomplished on a voluntary basis. It is a service that requires a significant commitment in terms of time, skills and personal resources, generously made available to the Order’s activities.

It is precisely for this reason that the Grand Magistry considers it essential to invest in the preparation of its diplomatic representatives. This initiative was designed to give the new ambassadors a clear and operational overview of the responsibilities and opportunities of their assignment.

Throughout the day, participants were able to talk with the Order of Malta’s High Offices and the heads of the key offices of the Grand Magistry, exploring the objectives of the Order’s diplomatic action and how the ambassadorial mandate can be effectively performed.

Grand Commander Fra’ Emmanuel Rousseau talked about the significance of the Order’s sovereignty and the role of its diplomacy in promoting charitable works; the Receiver of the Common Treasure Fra’ Francis Vassallo instead drew attention to the importance of transparent and responsible financial management, an essential element in supporting the Order’s activities and preserving its international credibility.

The concluding panel addressed issues such as relations with local authorities and with the diplomatic corps, dialogue with civil society and religious institutions, as well as the importance of communication and protocol in representational activity.

The day was divided into several working sessions and discussions, also dedicated to the operational instruments available to the Order’s embassies.
