08/05/2025

The Sovereign Order of Malta and the Republic of Poland have agreed to step up their cooperation on humanitarian and development aid to Ukraine through a Letter of Intent signed today at the Chancellery of the Prime Minister in Warsaw. The document was signed by Mr. Pawel Kowal, Chairman of the Council for Cooperation with Ukraine, and Ambassador Niels Lorijn – on behalf of the Grand Chancellor of the Sovereign Order of Malta, Riccardo Paternò di Montecupo.
The agreement provides a framework for cooperation between Poland and the Order of Malta aimed at supporting those affected by the ongoing war in Ukraine and the country’s post-war reconstruction. Concrete areas of focus include:

– emergency relief;

– prosthetics;

– physical and mental rehabilitation of victims;

– first-aid and rescue training;

– assistance to the population of the Kharkiv region; and

– development aid.

The Order of Malta has been active in Ukraine since the 1990s. With a presence in 15 cities and an Embassy in Kyiv, the Order of Malta is at the forefront of providing steadfast assistance to the victims of this terrible war, including humanitarian aid, emergency response, first aid & rescue training, medical assistance, psychological and psycho-social support, assistance to the elderly and persons with disabilities, care and activities for children, distribution of food and survival kits, soup kitchens and the provision of prosthetics.

Ambassador Lorijn commented: “Poland and the Order of Malta share a common commitment to support the Ukrainian people and to achieve a lasting peace. This important partnership with the Council for Cooperation with Ukraine will allow Poland and the Order of Malta to better coordinate and expand our joint efforts and resources towards bringing much needed relief to those in need, while sowing the seeds for the country’s future reconstruction. We are grateful to the Polish authorities, and in particular to Mr Pawel Kowal, Chairman of the Council for Cooperation with Ukraine, for their trust and initiative to launch this important partnership, and we look forward to working together on its implementation in the months and years to come.”
